Feeding of Fin Whales
Fin whales feed mainly on krill but also eat schooling fish including herring, cod, mackerel, pollock, sardine and capelin. Fish are eaten more often in the winter.
During fall and winter there is almost no feeding and they get their energy from stored fat in their blubber.
The Fin Whale are filter eaters; they filter the food particles from the water using the baleen plates on each side of the mouth. They hunt their prey by swimming toward it with their mouth open consuming large amounts of food and water.
Largest predatory threat to whales is other whales, mostly killer whales. Whales will band together when feeling threatened to fight off their attacker.
